I’ve been spending my spare time recently developing a couple of Flash games to refresh my Actionscript skills. Along the way i’ve discovered a couple of great projects that have saved me an amazing amount of time. So I’d like to credit them and tell you how they’ve helped me.
The first project is the Actionscript Physics Engine (APE) - it’s basically a physics simulator which allows you to produce real-world forces in Flash. That may well sound incredibly boring, but the great thing is that with the extremely difficult work (creating a game engine) already done – it frees me up to just concentrate on making a fun and compelling game.
While APE astounded me by the shear amount of work that had gone into it – I soon after found another system which is proving to be even more powerful. Box2D for Flash is very similar to APE but has allowed me to achieve a couple of things that I wanted in my game that APE doesn’t yet offer (Angular Velocity in collisions, for those who care). Using Box2D to do all the complex stuff has left me free to develop two great game ideas.
